Occupational Safety and Health Committee

What is OSH Committee?
A committee established at workplace, chaired by the CEO/GM or a Manager appointed by the CEO. The members of the committee includes employer and employee responsibility.
Both the employer and employees will be engaged in regular consultation through the committee to improve workplace safety.  The committee meets regularly to discuss Occupational Safety and Health matters at workplace. 
An OSH Committee is set-up as per Section 30, OSHA 1994 and OSH Committee regulations.

Establishing an OSH Committee
An employer with more then 40 employees shall establish an OSH Committee.



A Chairman shall be appointed. Either the Senior leaders or the senior leader appoints a manager to chair the committee.


The chairman shall appoint a Secretary. If the organization has a Safety Officer, he will by default be the secretary. For organizations without a safety officer can appoint the OSH-Coordinator or others.

Appoint Employer Rep:-
  • if employees less then 100, at least 2 reps
  • if employees more 101 and above, at least 4 reps

  • if employees less then 100, at least 2 reps
  • if employees more 101 and above, at least 4 reps

Roles of OSH Committee
​OSH Committee has 2 Major Roles.
  1. Conduct Meetings
  2. Carry out OSH Committee Functions
OSH Committee Meetings
1.Schedule Meeting Every 3 Months Once. 
​But a meeting shall be called immediately in the event of an accident that led to loss of life or serious bodily injury, a near miss accident & ​dangerous occurrence.


2.Confirm Agenda: Invitation for meeting plus agenda shall be sent to all committee members. ( Suggest-2 weeks before the meeting.

3.Prepare Minutes of Meeting and two be furnished to all members within two weeks after the meeting.
Meeting minutes shall be kept for 7 years for inspection purpose.

Functions of OSH Committee
  • Assist in developing Safe Operation Procedures (SOP)
  • Review effectiveness of OSH Programs.
  • Analyze Accidents Trends and reports
  • Review OSH Policies
  • Conduct Safety Inspection ( Every 3 months once)- to be discussed during OSH Committee Meeting.
  • Investigate into any accidents that happened at workplace. Includes:- Fatal, Serious Bodily Injury, Near Miss accidents, dangerous occurrence, occupational poisoning or occupational diseases.
  • Investigate complaints:- internal or external.
