The book "Beyond Total Quality Management Toward Emerging Paradigm" was written and published in 1994. Twenty Six years later, we believe the ideas and thoughts are as applicable today as it was in the past.

The central theme of the book is provided as a quote below. It is about managing and continuously improving cross-functional systems to provide customer value.
How can a leader accomplish the above? We sincerely believe your ISO 9001 management system has the answer. Are you leveraging on your ISO 9001 system to achieve Operational Improvement and Excellence?

ISO 9001 & OPERATIONAL IMPROVEMENT

The ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management System has been one of highly popular standard adopted by various organisations. The system helps organisations to ensure conformity and consistency of products and services provided to customers.  The standard also aims to enhance an organization's customer satisfaction through continuous improvement of systems and processes.
With more than a million companies certified to ISO 9001, the results have been mix. Some organizations have benefitted from the implementation of the standard and yet many have not seen the benefit.
We believe that many have not achieved success as the driver of the system has been outsourced to the quality department and the system is purely seen from the perspective of quality control and assurance. 
Based on the argument above, ISO 9001 requirements comes alive when it is subjected to external audit and top management goes through the motion by attending management review process.
Is there a better way to get the most out of implementing ISO 9001? 
Yes. A firm yes. 
The frameworks below shows the inter-relationship among the various clauses of ISO 9001.

The framework shows clearly that the main driver of the system is the top management of the business (clause 5).  Clause 5 sets the stage for processes to operate at optimum level. Clause 9 helps the management team to review the performance. Clause 10, helps the management team to drive continuous improvement.  
Based on the above argument, we are of the opinion that organizations to start  using the ISO 9001 as one of the main driver of business improvement which will support commercial and financial success of the organization. Use the framework to regularly review the operational performance of the business.
