​Safety leadership is about ​inspiring and influencing peoples in organizations to embrace safe behavior at work.
The people who inspire and influence others are called safety leaders. Safety leaders embrace safety as a core value for them, and models best safe behavior at work. They follow established safety standards and protocols in the organization.
Safety leaders believe it is important to get work done safely and impress upon others to follow established safety procedures, as they do not want their peers, colleagues and subordinates gets injured while doing work.
Safety leaders provide constructive feedback and suggestions to help organizations to improve work and workplace to be safer. They will report safety issues when they arise and ensure appropriate actions are taken.
Who can be a safety leader? Anyone in the organization who walks the talk in demonstrating safe behaviors. They can be team leaders, frontline supervisors, executives, engineers, middle managers, head of departments, vice presidents, directors, and CEO’s.
In summary, safety Leaders sets a safety standard on themselves before they can inspire and influence others to raise their safety standards.

When we discuss about safety leadership, it is assumed to be focussing on CEO's, Senior Managers and Heads of Department. This assumption is flawed and far from truth. 
Anyone in an organization can be a safety leader. Your role in the organization does not matter. 
What matters is you embrace safety as your core value. What matters is you take initiative to influence your colleagues, peers and other members of your organization. 
Most importantly you continously take effort to influence the people working for you. Changing each and everyone to embrace safety is important. Imagine, the impact on you when your people work safely. You can take confidence that work will be completed safely. No accident. No one injured. No downtime. 
Most importantly your people will go home safely to their loved ones.

Highly effective safety leaders are those who regularly engages with his employees. They seek to understand the causes for employees taking risk. They understand, that employees do not take risk for the sake of taking risk or for the fun of it. 
Questions that leaders may seek to understand is if the employee lacks awareness on the risk of task at hand. If they are aware, then what is causing them to take risk? Is it due to peer pressure, or line leaders encouragement to get work done fast? Is it due to the line leaders themselves are not establishing high standard of safety? Are the current work procedures is difficult to follow, as it does not reflect the actual work environment?
Many, questions, and the one who will have the answer is the person doing the work themselves.
Seek to find the real causes and address the issues.

​How often do you spend time to observe actual work? The simple truth is that you will get to know the reality of issues while observing work and engaging with people doing the work. NO Time, you say. You may find some if you review all the meetings you attend.
