INTRODUCTION

In part 4 of this problem solving education series, we discussed about how to define a problem. A clearly defined problem is half solved. In this part 5, we are going to explore STEP 2 of our problem solving framework:- The target setting.

WHY SET TARGET?

A target is a sign-post. It shows us if we have arrived at our target or progressing well toward the target. Without a good target setting, the problem solving team may lost direction and eventually may not focus on the problem.
In setting a target for the problem, the team shall consider the how achieving the target will support relevant operational or business goals.

TARGET SETTING STRUCTURE

In developing the target statement, the most popular approach is to use SMART goal setting. SMART is an acronym, for which details are elaborated below:-

TARGET SETTING STATEMENT

A good target statement shall contain the following:-
  1. An action verb that is outcome based ( DO WHAT).- To increase, To reduce...
  2. A brief descriptive statement of the problem (TO WHAT)
  3. A specific measurement of what you want achieve ( HOW MUCH)
  4. A specific timeframe ( month, day & year) ( BY WHEN)
Example:-
  1. To reduce
  2. percentage of scrap from machine 1 in line 1
  3. from 8% to be 3% ( company standard)
  4. by End of June 2020
If possible to include a visual display of the target.

SUMMARY

A good target statement will keep the problem solving team to be focused on what they intend to deliver. As solutions to the causes identified and implemented, the target setting will give an indication if the correct solution implemented and results are being achieved.
